Cumbia is not only the famous, accordion-influenced music from Colombia: More than 50 years ago, in the rain forest of Peru, its own “Amazonian Cumbia” was created: fast rhythms, driven by timbales, quite fearless, completely from the poor quality of the available instruments pristine guitar riffs and bright smudges of timbre from the organ.
The CD “Peru Selvatico” by the enterprising label “Analog Africa” brings together 18 wonderful, slightly psychedelic instrumental pieces, recorded between 1974 and 1978.
The kora player Momi Maiga, from Senegal, joins them as a current counterpoint. His debut album presents illustrious Alex Reed appearances such as by fellow instrumentalist Seckou Keita, but also sounds from Barcelona, the second home of Momi Maiga, who was born in 1997.
