Culture: Christian singer Amy Grant winner of the Kennedy Center

Amy Grant will attend the 45th Kennedy Center ceremony on December 4. The evangelical pop singer was named the winner on July 21 by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Created in 1978, this distinction in fact devotes each year the career of artists who have “illustrated themselves in a prodigious way” and contributed to “American culture”.

The class of 2022 is made up of Amy Grant, actor George Clooney, Irish rock band U2 and Cuban-American composer Tania León. The Kennedy Center Honors also honors soul legend, Adventist Gladys Knight. “Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined receiving this prestigious Kennedy Center Honors award,” Amy Grant said in a statement.

61-year-old Amy Grant has won six Grammy Award. Author, composer and performer, she has sold more than 30 million albums. In addition, she was the first artist of christian music contemporary to be #1 on the pop charts. It was thanks to his title “Next Time I Fall” in duet with Peter Cetera in 1986.

David M. Rubenstein, President of the Kennedy Center, thus praised the Christian artist. In a statement, he says she is “the first artist to bring contemporary Christian music to the forefront of American culture.” He further assures that she is recognized as “the queen of Christian pop”.
