Cultivating the Mind: The Inspiring Story of Yeusvi Flores

Every July 22nd, World Brain Day is commemorated, an initiative of the World Federation of Neurology to highlight the importance of brain health. Why is it important to take care of our brain? Because it is the most complex and vital organ in the body, controlling all our bodily functions, from heartbeats to memory and thinking.

Despite its importance, we often do not give it the attention it deserves in terms of care and disease prevention.

Below I share tips to maintain a healthy brain:

1.— Healthy eating: A balanced diet is essential for brain health. Foods rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals provide essential nutrients for the brain.

It is important to eat fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in antioxidants such as blueberries, strawberries and spinach; Omega-3 fatty acids, which are present in fatty fish such as salmon, walnuts and chia seeds; and whole grains, which are foods such as oats, brown rice and quinoa that help improve blood circulation in the brain.

2.— Regular exercise: Regular physical exercise not only improves cardiovascular health, but also has positive effects on the brain. Exercise increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain, which can improve memory and learning. At least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least 5 days a week is recommended.

3.— Mental stimulation: Keeping your brain active and challenged is crucial to its long-term health. Activities such as reading, learning a new language, solving puzzles, or playing a musical instrument can strengthen neural connections and improve cognitive function.

4.— Adequate sleep: Sleep is vital for memory consolidation and cell repair. During sleep, the brain eliminates toxins accumulated during the day. It is important to maintain a regular sleep routine and sleep between seven and nine hours per night.

5.— Stress management: Chronic stress can have negative effects on the brain, such as shrinking the size of the hippocampus, a region crucial for memory. Practicing relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga and deep breathing can help reduce stress levels.

6.— Avoid harmful substances: Alcohol and drug use can have devastating effects on brain health. These substances can damage neurons and negatively affect cognitive function. It is recommended to limit alcohol consumption and completely avoid illegal drugs.

Prevention

By taking care of our brains, we are also helping to prevent neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and stroke. Prevention is essential and can make a big difference in quality of life as we age.

World Brain Day reminds us of the importance of taking care of this vital organ through healthy habits. By following these tips we not only improve our brain function in the present, but we also protect our cognitive health for the future. Let’s celebrate and take care of our brain every day of the year!
