Apples from Eastern Styria

Apples from Styria – a classic. But did you know that three out of four apples come from the east of the state? The districts of Weiz, Hartberg-Fürstenfeld and Feldbach are true fruit paradises and have specialized in this sweet and sour delicacy. The core of this area is the ApfelLand around Puch, which is also the largest fruit-growing community in the country. The Celts began growing them here, and Puch apples even made it to Egypt and the tsar’s court. You can get the best examples at farmers’ markets or from direct marketers – in their pure form, of course, but also as apple cider, schnapps, jams and apple sparkling wine.

The best addresses for all things apple:

  • House of the Apple: Apple Museum in Puch near Weiz
  • Mostgut Kuchlbauer: apple wine & sparkling wine, cider bar with home-baked wood-fired bread and other farm specialties
  • Apfelhof Buchgraber: apple cultivation for three generations, fruit spreads, raspberry tiramisu, Apfelhoftaler and tasty grapes from grandma
  • Event: Apple Street Autumn in Puch near Weiz

Pöllauer Hirschbirne

Styrian apples are well known, but have you ever tried a Hirschbirne from Pöllau? This old Styrian fruit variety has a rounded shape and a very pleasant, bitter-sweet taste that you won’t taste anywhere else. And as special as it is on the palate, its uses are just as varied: it is distilled and drunk as a brandy, eaten dried as dried pears aka Kletze and fermented into must. In addition to the traditional processing methods, farmers now also produce deer pear juice, pure brandy, vinegar and jam from Pöllau deer pears. A must-try if you are traveling in the east of the Green Mark!

ALMO beef

The ALMO oxen grow in a species-appropriate manner in the meadows in the Almenland Nature Park and are fed particularly high-quality grass and fresh herbs. This good attitude is also reflected in the quality of the meat: it is tender, with fine grain and marbling. In addition, the meat is matured in a special process – the last stop in a sustainable, long product process that is subject to strict rules regarding sustainability, husbandry and production. The brand is protected; only 500 alpine farmers produce this special beef.

Wine & wine taverns

The Romans already knew how to use the perfect terroir of Eastern Styria for wine growing 2,000 years ago. Their relics are the delicious wines and the tons of great wineries that you can find along the East Styrian Roman Wine Route today. Between Gleisdorf and Bad Waltersdorf, there are wine farms following wine farms following wine taverns, all of which are just waiting to treat you to a legendary Brettljause. Anyone staying overnight on site can plan a holiday on a bike or motorbike and explore the area in their own vehicle. By the way, a very special white wine cuvée here is the URBANUS®: every year on February 2nd – Candlemas – a fire ritual is used to decide in which light the URBANUS® wines are allowed to rest in the cellar. A very special spectacle with its own program that you should put in your calendar now.
