The attendance at the event of support for the Palestinian people, which was organized and supported by the Turkish Consulate in Komotini, was not only disappointing but… tragic! It took place at noon on Saturday in the central square of Xanthi.
Officially, permission for the gathering and the march was requested and secured by the AT of Xanthi, the Vakufiki Committee of Alkione. (s.s. settlement of the municipality of Abdira). However, the Turkish Consul of Komotini, Aykut Unal, traveled at least three times to Alkioni, Xanthi, in order to convince the members of the Vakuf Committee to “come forward” and appear as the organizers of the support event. At the same time, he had put “free and bound” in Xanthi in order to mobilize the members of the minority and participate en masse in the call. But despite the mobilization and pressure, when it came time for the event, the picture was laughable as less than 200 people showed up!
In fact, the event was subdued, with the organizers shouting through the loudspeakers and microphones, lest they stir up the… 200 who responded. At the same time, more than 200 members of the minority, sat in the cafes of the square and observed with apathy the supposedly important manifestation of support for the Palestinian people. The march that took place in the main streets was just as subdued, with the participants slowly getting distracted and finally returning to the central square, even fewer! Of course, the general picture angered not only the “official” organizers, but also the Turkish Consulate, which once again failed to mobilize the minority, proving that year after year, it is losing its footing and influence within its .
The event had the same lukewarm reception from the Turkish-speaking mass media of the region, which made a general reference to “many compatriots” and “crowd”, avoiding the crowns for a successful event and for a mass attendance.
