Cubana de Aviación has reported a significant delay in its most popular domestic flights in Cuba, affecting the route between Havana and Holguín. According to the company, this change is due to “force majeure,” although the official statement does not offer specific details about the causes that led to the modification of the original itinerary.
48-hour delay on Havana-Holguín-Havana flights
Flights CU972 and CU973, covering the Havana-Holguín-Havana route, originally scheduled for August 7, have been rescheduled for Friday, August 9. Flight CU972 will depart Havana at 10:00 am, while CU973 will take off from Holguín at 1:00 pm. This 48-hour delay has raised concerns among passengers, who must adjust their travel plans accordingly.
Attention to affected passengers
Cubana de Aviación has made several contact lines available to affected passengers for further information. Passengers can call the number 24 468148, corresponding to the Office at Pico Cristal, or 24 474707, which belongs to the Office at the Airport. The airline has expressed its apologies for the inconvenience caused and assures that it is taking measures to minimize the impact on travelers.
Recommendations for passengers
Passengers are advised to check their flight schedules for updates and stay in touch with the airline for additional information. In addition, the Telegram channels of the different Cuban airports are providing real-time updates on the situation.
Recent problems of Cubana de Aviación
This incident adds to other recent challenges faced by Cubana de Aviación. In July, Ecuador revoked the airline’s operating permits due to the inactivity of its only cargo aircraft, a Tupolev Tu-204-100EC, and the definitive closure of its commercial partner, LAS of Colombia. This decision affected the airline’s regular cargo and international mail operations, further complicating its situation.
Increase in fares on domestic flights
Since March 1, the Cuban government has implemented a significant increase in fares for domestic flights operated by Cubana de Aviación, justifying this measure by the rise in fuel costs. This adjustment in fares has led to an average increase of almost four times compared to previous prices. For example, a flight from Havana to Guantanamo now costs 4,300 CUP, and a round-trip ticket between Havana and Santiago de Cuba amounts to 8,400 CUP, which is equivalent to four times the minimum wage.
The population fears that these increases in the cost of transport will aggravate economic difficulties and further limit mobility within the island, recalling past economic crises in Latin America that resulted in poverty and social destabilization. The effects of these measures, added to the airline’s operational problems, pose an uncertain outlook for air transport in Cuba.
