A video published on TikTok by Yenny González, a Cuban resident in Miami, has unleashed a great controversy on social networks. In the video, González harshly criticizes her relatives and acquaintances in Cuba for only writing to her and calling her to ask for money.
“Starting with the family, no one gave you a penny to get to this country,” says González in the video. “I had to eliminate a pile of contacts, because everyone was complaining regarding their economic problems when they didn’t write to me in Cuba.”
The young woman, who has only been away from Cuba for a year and a half, assures that she needs to focus on what is really important: her son, who stayed on the island. “The rest is not my responsibility,” she said. “I’m not the only one who might be crazy. I know that in Cuba there is a need, but here there are also problems.”
The Cuban also criticized those who ask her for money to buy cigarettes or go to the disco, while she works hard in the United States to pay the rent and support her son. “I can’t stand Cuba anymore, starting with the family, they don’t let you prosper,” she added.
Advise other newcomers to the United States
González also had words for those who had recently arrived in the United States and recommended that they focus on themselves and forget what they left behind, except their children. “Cuba absorbs you,” he claimed.
“Leave the rest behind, because it totally absorbs you, mentally, physically, economically, everything,” he stressed.
Split comments
The video of this Cuban in Miami has generated a large number of comments on social networks, with divided opinions. Some users support the young woman and consider that she is right to criticize those who take advantage of the situation of relatives living abroad.
“I don’t know her, but that girl partly said many things that are true,” commented one user. “The family never abandons each other, but sometimes you can’t even have a beer in peace. “They have enslaved the Cuban to the mentality of remittances.”
However, other users criticized her for her lack of empathy towards her relatives in Cuba. “My God, forgive her, have mercy on her words,” wrote one user. “I owe it to my family and I help them without protest and my mother above all things.”
Advice for the emigrant:
The psychologist Sergio Delgado in the Psychological Guide for Emigrants publishes a series of recommendations to avoid what it calls “unnecessary burdens”:
- Don’t take responsibility for the expectations or fears of others.
- Do not base yourself on family or social criteria if they are not yours.
- Focus on your own adaptation to the new context.
- We have no obligation to please anyone, nor to prove anything to anyone.
