Cuban migrants find work in Mexican markets 2024-03-30 02:15:35

On their journey to the southern border of the United States, thousands of Cuban migrants find work in Mexico. Above all, the markets are those that welcome those born on the Island and in other countries in the region in an identical situation.

The main beneficiaries so far of these job opportunities are Cubans and Venezuelans.

The Central Supply Market (CEDA) in Mexico City itself offers stalls to these passing migrants. Some even decide to stay in Aztec lands and not continue their journey north.

On the subject, the television network Aztec News took impressions of several migrants who now work in Mexico. “We were forced to leave our country for economic reasons,” said María Teresa García, a Venezuelan emigrant.

In that same case, there are many migrants who left their countries as professionals but decided to look for better remuneration. As several of them say, “we prefer to be general assistants of whatever, here in Mexico.”

Another migrant who found work in Mexico is the Cuban Andrés Sánchez Hurtado. He has a degree in Tourism and now works as a checker and salesman.

“I was head of reception at a hotel. The change is felt, but when you emigrate you have to be prepared for everything.”

Wait for the jump

The majority wait in Mexico for their CBP One appointment and thus present their case for political asylum in the United States. But, in the meantime, it is essential to work in Mexico to maintain the rent and cover minimum food expenses. So far, this is a viable option for them.

Last February it emerged that around 50 large Mexican companies joined forces to employ migrants from Cuba, Venezuela and Haiti.

The extensive list includes well-known companies such as Amazon, Walmart, HSBC and the Marriott International hotel chain, among many others.
