The government of Guyana announced that it will hire at least 10 Cuban engineers to work at a state energy plant. The news came in the voice of his own president of the country Irfaan Ali.

The objective of the agreement is for the Island’s experts to provide technical advice on the operation of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) plant.

Ali assured that “he has engaged with the Cuban ambassador in Guyana, Jorge Francisco Luis, on the issue of the importation of Cuban engineers.

The president also said that “the hiring of Cuban engineers is a method to address the challenges faced by the electric company.”

The head of state also assured that “the Cuban technical staff is qualified, very qualified, and they are willing to deploy immediately to work on the system and help us technically.”

The GPL company has tried to hire Guyanese engineers, but it has not been possible because we have demand in other areas, said Irfaan.

“The help of the Cubans will contribute to working on the 36 megawatt energy machine. When connected to the GPL Demarara-Berbice Interconnection System, homes and businesses need more electricity to operate.”

The president of Guyana also confirmed that “according to the forecasts, we have to go for more energy. But this facility gives us room to make investments in infrastructure. “Everything is put in place to support energy demand.”

Turkish patanas to the rescue

The Turkish ports, like those in several Cuban ports, will also provide energy to Guyana. In fact, last week the vice president, Bharrat Jagdeo, revealed that they were finalizing an agreement with the Turkish electricity company, Karpowership, for the supply of 36 megawatts of energy.

Guyana began a long-term plan to build the 165-megawatt Amaila Falls hydroelectric plant. The plan also includes completing the construction of a 300 megawatt natural gas plant in Wales, West Bank Demerara.
