In Ciego de Ávila, the shortage of wheat flour has led to a drastic measure: families now receive standardized bread of only 50 grams instead of the 80 grams to which they were accustomed. This reduction in bread size is a response to the acute lack of flour affecting the Caribbean nation.
Yadiel Pérez Téllez, coordinator of Programs and Objectives in the provincial government, explained to the local press who still cannot predict when they will be able to produce bread in the usual quantities once more. However, he assured that as soon as the necessary flour arrives and they are sure of being able to restore the coverage, they will return to the usual 80 grams.
Although the official assures that this size reduction should not affect the quality of the bread, it is important to note that bread is one of the most critical products for Cubans.
Pérez Téllez also reported that the price of the bodega’s bread, popularly known, is reduced to 0.85 cents, although in some units it is still sold for 1.00 pesos.
Snack bread
The bread intended for school snacks will continue to maintain its weight of 80 grams, while the rest intended for social consumption is offered in 50 grams, as indicated by the official.
The serious shortage of wheat flour has led to an unsustainable situation that has generated criticism among the population, since they are paying for a product that lacks quality and is made with substitutes such as cassava and banana flour, among other ingredients.
The food crisis in Cuba has been going on for a long time, with bread being one of the hardest hit products. Last June, Cubans were affected by the lack of bread in the basic basket for several days, as a result of the acute shortage of wheat flour that persists in the country.
