Cuba will import eggs from Colombia for the first time and will do so very soon. This was confirmed by the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA). Food production decreased on the Island, from five million a day in 2020 to only 2.2 million last year.
According to the Colombian media RCN Radio, two 40-foot containers loaded with 17,280 trays, 30 units each, for a total of 518,400 eggs, will leave for Cuba in the next few hours.
Juan Fernando Roa Ortiz, general manager of the ICA, expressed that “as a country, we are very proud to have achieved this important milestone.
This first export of eggs to Cuba is testimony to the commitment of our producers to health, safety and quality, allowing our products to reach more international markets.”
The executive also noted that “we are sure that our high-quality fresh eggs will be well received by consumers on the Island.”
Colombia at FIHAV 2023
Meanwhile, Gonzalo Moreno, executive president of the National Federation of Poultry Farmers (FENAVI) of Colombia, recalled his nation’s participation in the Havana International Fair (FIHAV), in 2023.
According to his criteria, in the conclave commercial agreements were consolidated and health contracts were defined between the ICA and CENASA, the Cuban health authority.
In the midst of the food crisis in Cuba and in the face of high inflation rates, the “solution” has been to import almost everything. National production on the Island is completely insufficient to supply the internal market.
In fact, Havana has had to look for several markets to guarantee the supply of eggs, including the United States.
Last November, the Island bought more than a million dollars worth of this product from the United States, something completely unprecedented.
Currently, a carton of eggs in the Cuban informal market costs approximately $3000.00 CUP. The minimum wage on the Island is just $2100.00 CUP.
