The hope of all of Cuba is placed in Mijaín López, the giant from Pinar del Río registered in the 130-kilogram category of Greco-Roman wrestling, after the recent disappointments with other Cuban sports figures.
López, accompanied by the other four members of the Greco-Roman wrestling team, has arrived in Paris with the mission of achieving historic results.
“We have fulfilled our objective of completing the proposed preparation. We have been in Croatia, Hungary and Bulgaria, and everything has gone well. We have managed to maintain our highest level and avoid injuries in order to arrive in optimal condition to the village. This is the first mission accomplished,” said the legendary gladiator, quoted by JITwho is currently the most famous Cuban in the French capital.
Mijaín López is seeking an unprecedented fifth Olympic title, an achievement that many, both Cuban and international, can only dream of. “We know the responsibility we have and we just have to wait until the 5th to give everyone the joy they expect and be the flagship sport that we have always been,” said López.
Mijaín López for history
Lopez, who made her Olympic debut at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where she finished fifth, began her impressive career with her triumph at Beijing 2008, followed by victories at London 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
“I have never had a bronze medal at home. I have come here with one goal, which is to show the world who Mijaín López is,” he told journalist Héctor Villar at the airport.
When does Mijaín López make his debut?
This Monday, August 5, López will make his debut at the Grand Palais Éphémère. Although the prestigious magazine Sports Illustrated has placed him as the bronze medalist in Paris, behind the Iranian Amin Mirzazadeh and the Egyptian Abdellatif Mohamed, the Cuban champion is determined to demonstrate his supremacy. The first fight is scheduled for 9:00 am (Cuban time) and the semi-finals will be today, after 3:00 pm. The final will take place this Tuesday, August 6, at 2:30 pm (island time).
Cuba’s hopes for the Olympic Games have suffered a severe blow with the early exits of prominent figures such as boxer Julio César La Cruz, judoka Idalys Ortiz and high jumper Leyanis Pérez. Amid these disappointments, the entire country looks to Mijaín López as its great hope for regaining Olympic glory.
