Cuba to send lawyers and police to Russia for training 2024-07-03 00:31:25

During a visit to St. Petersburg, Oscar Manuel Silvera Martinez, Cuba’s Minister of Justice, confirmed that Cuban police officers and lawyers will receive training in Russia.

According to Silvera Martínez, training in Russia will help strengthen bilateral relations. “It is essential for us that our police officers and lawyers are trained here in Russia, this will strengthen our relations,” she told Russia News.

The Cuban minister attended the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum, where he stressed that Cuban professionals will be trained in both police practices and jurisprudence at Russian universities.

He stressed the importance of these exchanges to strengthen collaboration between the ministries of justice of both countries and mentioned the similarity of many legal institutions in both nations.

In October 2023, Silvera signed a memorandum of understanding with his Russian counterpart, Konstantin Chuychenko, to collaborate in the legal field. During this visit, Silvera met with Russian specialists in civil registration, notary services and training. All of this, according to a statement from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX).

Other agreements in the region

These initiatives are in line with other police and legal training agreements in countries in the region, such as Nicaragua. In March, the National Assembly of that country approved an agreement with Russia for cooperation in retraining and professional development in the police field, with a duration of ten years, extendable for another decade.

Patrushev, who is also an adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, met in Managua with delegates from Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, and expressed Russia’s readiness to fully cooperate with these countries on security.

In Cuba, the proliferation of crime remains a problem. Manuel Marrero Cruz, the Cuban prime minister, acknowledged the need to improve administrative efficiency in factories and warehouses to address problems at their source and stressed the importance of intensifying preventive actions. However, the population often complains that police resources are more effective and faster in repressing protests.
