Cuba announced that it will carry out a new project in the Northern Strip of Canasí, province of Mayabeque, related to energy generation. In the midst of the energy crisis on the Island, natural gas will now be extracted with the aim of contributing to the National System.
The National Electrical Union (UNE) revealed details of the process on its profile on the social network Facebook. For example, it emerged that the Canasí 300 project has as its main goal achieving energy sovereignty with national sources.
Now the project is presented as something new. However, a preview of it was announced in September 2023.
The Cuban Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O Levy, referred to the topic, then. The executive indicated in a television report that a third well would be drilled gas. In this way, the electricity generation of the mixed company Energás SA would increase.
Generation power increase
De la O Levy also recalled that two wells had already been drilled in 2023 in order to increase the power of electricity generation. The entire process is based on the use of gas. One of them was in May and the other in June; This allowed us to have 400 thousand more cubic meters of product.
The energy crisis in Cuba seems to have no end. Blackouts are becoming more and more recurrent throughout almost the entire Island. Several important generating plants are outside the National System due to breakdowns, maintenance and even lack of fuel.
Among those that are not currently providing energy to the country are the Antonio Guiteras Power Plant, in Matanzas, and the Nuevitas Power Plant, in Camagüey. Unit 3 of the CTE Santa Cruz, unit 2 of the CTE Felton, unit 8 of the CTE Mariel and unit 6 of the CTE Rente are also not operational.
Given this announcement, some residents hope that conditions will improve in the medium-term future. However, the majority does not hide their skepticism regarding the new Energy and Mines project.
