In the midst of the food crisis, Cuba announced that it imported 500 tons of powdered milk from the United States. With that amount it will guarantee to cover the demand for only two months.
The purchase was carried out through the exceptions established to sell certain products to the Island, through immediate payment and in cash. This is what the newly elected Minister of the Food Industry of the Island Alberto López Díaz stated to the Cuban press.
The executive assured that with this imported quantity, in addition to the arrival of a ship from Brazil, the demand is covered until next April. Mainly, the destination of the food is children from zero to seven years of age. Pregnant women and consumers on medical diets will also benefit.
The minister revealed that Cuba consumes regarding two thousand tons of powdered milk per month. Only the aforementioned consumer groups benefit. “Stability in distribution is guaranteed for the months of March and April,” said López Díaz.
Likewise, he confirmed that in addition to those 500 tons, another 500 arrived in the country from Brazil, 245 from Canada and 600 from other suppliers. Regarding the origin of the latter, he did not reveal details.
