The Riga City Council has asked the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) to clarify whether the moped-like vehicles currently riding on the sidewalks are actually the electric bicycles under which they were registered, writes LETA.
In an interview with the Latvian television program “Morning Panorama”, the mayor of Riga, Vilnis Kirsis, said that the municipal police have been instructed to contact the CSDD to find out who, according to their technical parameters, are the vehicles that are now driving on the sidewalks of the capital, externally similar to electric mopeds, but designed as electric bicycles.
Kirsis explained that the Duma does not have the authority to decide whether the vehicle is an electric moped or an electric bicycle. Therefore, if the CSDD “clearly and clearly answers that these are mopeds,” then the Duma will act accordingly.
Meanwhile, according to Kirsis, the situation has been improved by the introduction of restrictions on parking of electric scooters in Old Riga. However, despite the restrictions, the municipality is faced with attempts by individual merchants to circumvent the rules by allowing customers to leave scooters where they want for a certain fine. “Such cases must be dealt with, now we are collecting materials,” the politician said, promising to restore order.
“If the businessmen themselves are not socially responsible and believe that they can do as they want, then in the worst case we will have to ban this practice in Riga,” Kirsis warned, admitting that for now he only wants to scare dishonest businessmen with the fact that The municipality has such a tool.
