The cryptocurrency debate is intensifying as the 2024 US presidential election approaches, and several candidates have already revealed their plans for the sector.

Since digital devices are expected to feature prominently in the US presidential election campaign, a substantial part of voters will also be interested in how their preferred presidential candidate relates to bitcoin (BTC).

Recognizing this Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy on May 27th, its director launched a poll on Twitter to find out whether voters think the presidential candidate should support bitcoin or not.

By May 29, nearly 31,000 Twitter users had shared their opinion, with 84% responding in the affirmative. The survey can be interpreted as showing that the public has a strong desire for candidates who actively support and promote the use of bitcoin in both the political and economic spheres.

Cryptoregulation and presidential polls

The conversation about crypto regulation has accelerated after several of the presidential candidates of both parties highlighted that they want to develop the sector if they take office. For example, Ron DeSantis, the incumbent governor of Florida and Republican presidential candidate, recently chatted with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and the topic of the conversation was cryptocurrencies.

During the speech, DeSantis criticized President Joe Biden’s approach to bitcoin and expressed concern that ongoing regulatory tightening could potentially stifle its growth, stating that “he will probably be killed in the end”.

It is noteworthy that the United States is currently formulating various regulatory proposals for cryptocurrencies, although no final legislation has yet been enacted. Governor DeSantis has emphasized his intention to block anti-Bitcoin legislation from passing through Congress, highlighting his commitment to Bitcoin.

On the other side, Democratic candidate Robert F. Kennedy claimed to defend the right to hold bitcoin.

In addition to focusing on regulatory approaches, cryptocurrencies also play a role in campaign finance. Ahead of the 2024 primary, Kennedy and his Republican opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy, announced that they would accept bitcoin donations, reflecting the cryptocurrency’s growing use in political campaigns.
