A Timeless Tale of Czech Christmas love

Janek Ledecký’s 1993 song, “Promises Should Be Fulfilled at Christmas,” is a captivating Christmas story set against a uniquely Czech musical backdrop. As one music critic for The Guardian noted, the song’s instrumentation – accordion, guitar, and violin – creates an “American-adjacent” sound that beautifully complements the tale. The lyrics paint a picture of young love, a romance kindled on a Christmas eve, when two teenagers skipped mass to steal away a few precious moments of solitude. The song evokes the magic and innocence of first love, a feeling that lingers even as years pass and life takes its course. Fate intervenes, bringing the two lovers back together, but their encounter is fleeting. The song poignantly captures the ephemeral nature of time and memory, leaving listeners with a bittersweet reminder of youthful passion and the lasting impact of a brief but extraordinary connection.

Finding Christmas Inspiration in the Summer Heat

singer-songwriter Ledecký was tasked with a unique challenge: crafting a festive Christmas carol during the sun-drenched days of summer. “The Popron publishing house asked me for a Christmas song,” Ledecký revealed. He explained that he needed the quintessential Christmas ambiance – a decorated tree and the festive spirit – to truly capture the essence of the season in his music. “I promised her that I needed a tree and a Christmas atmosphere to make it, and then it would work itself out,” he shared.Life, though, had other plans. As Christmastime came and went, Ledecký found himself still seeking inspiration. “But I missed it at Christmas time, so I ended up writing it in August at the cottage, when it was about thirty-five in the shade,” he admitted. The pressure was on, and the singer was well aware of the anticipation building around his Christmas creation. “they were carrying the guilt spray for me until I wrote it,” he said with a hint of humour, alluding to the friendly but persistent reminders he received about his unfulfilled promise.
