Iraq – The Joint Operations Command of the Iraqi Army announced yesterday, Tuesday, the killing of the so-called “Wali Salah al-Din” in the terrorist organization “ISIS,” during an air strike in the north of the country, on Monday.
A statement issued by the command, seen by Anatolia, stated that, on Monday, “air strikes were carried out on a terrorist group’s hideout” in the Al-Aith area in Saladin Governorate.
He pointed out that after that, “a force from the detachments of the Salah al-Din Operations Command, the reconnaissance battalion, and the military intelligence detachments, under the supervision of the operations commander, set off at five o’clock in the morning (Tuesday), to search and inspect the targeted site.”
The statement added, “The force found 4 bodies of ISIS terrorists that were completely torn apart as a result of the precise airstrikes, including the body of someone called Abu Omar al-Quraishi, who is called (Wali Salah al-Din).”
He also explained that “the force found 3 explosive belts, a number of different weapons, night goggles, and a large quantity of hand grenades, in addition to 8 mobile phone devices and logistical and administrative materials belonging to the terrorist group that was eliminated in the operation.”
He pointed out that the force “found another terrorist nest near the first targeted site, and completely destroyed it, and operations are still continuing.”
The command stressed that “the security forces continue to carry out tasks accurately to achieve their goals, as part of specific operations aimed at eliminating the remnants of the defeated ISIS terrorist gangs.”
At the end of 2017, Baghdad declared victory over ISIS by regaining the lands it had controlled since the summer of 2014, amounting to about a third of Iraq’s area.
But the organization is still active in the governorates of Anbar (west), Salah al-Din and Kirkuk (north), and Diyala (east), and the government is launching security and military operations to eliminate it in the face of attacks it launches from time to time.

Analysis: A Significant Blow to ISIS in Iraq
In a recent development, the Joint Operations Command of the Iraqi Army announced the killing of a high-ranking ISIS official, known as “Wali Salah al-Din”, in an air strike in northern Iraq on Monday. This significant achievement comes amidst concerns of a potential resurgence of the terrorist organization in the country.
The killing of Wali Salah al-Din is a notable blow to ISIS, which has been facing significant setbacks in Iraq and Syria since the War against the Islamic State began. As reported by Wikipedia <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WaragainsttheIslamicState”>[[2]], efforts by various forces had significantly degraded the Islamic State’s capabilities by around 2019-2020. However, despite this progress, moderate fighting continues in Syria, and there have been concerns about a potential resurgence of the group in Iraq.
A Brookings Institution article [[1]] highlights the differences between ISIS and other terrorist organizations, such as Al Qaeda, in terms of their goals and threats. The article notes that ISIS, by 2013, had rebranded itself as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS or ISIL), reflecting its broader ambitions in the region.
Recent reports from the Stimson Center [[3]] have raised concerns about a potential resurgence of ISIS in Iraq, citing a partial U.S. drawdown of troops and rising tensions over the Gaza war as contributing factors. The killing of Wali Salah al-Din is a significant development in this context, as it demonstrates the Iraqi Army’s continued ability to target and eliminate high-ranking ISIS officials.
While this development is a positive step forward, it is essential to recognize that the fight against ISIS is far from over. The ongoing conflict in Syria and the potential for resurgence in Iraq highlight the need for continued cooperation and vigilance among international forces and the Iraqi government. The killing of Wali Salah al-Din serves as a reminder that, despite the progress made, the threat posed by ISIS remains real, and continued efforts are necessary to ensure the security and stability of the region.
As a blogger, I will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates on any further developments related to the War against the Islamic State and the potential resurgence of ISIS in Iraq.
