Crumbling UNESCO heritage on Laisvės avenue – a vase can knock on the heads of passers-by at any time

Concerns about one building on Laisvė aleja spread in the Internet space – as if an accident could happen at any time and a vase decorating it, for example, could fall from the facade.

How 15min said historian Alvydas Surblys, Laisvės al. Building 46 emerged in 1928 as Kazimieros Pociaus House, designed by one of the most famous engineers of the interwar period, Aleksandar Gordevičius. It is one of the more ornate buildings on Laisvės Alley.

It has changed a lot over time. For some time, Stasys Pocius, the owner of the “Forum” cinema, which operated in the courtyard, lived in the building, so this building is better known as S. Pocius’ house.

How 15min said Marius Švaikauskas, the elder of the Kaunas City Municipality Administration’s Center ward, these days part of the building belongs to private individuals, part to companies. A representative has been appointed by the decision of the co-owners, who is in contact with the council, municipality and other institutions.

“We have received reports from the people of Kaunas about the condition of the building. In the summer of this year, the ward’s specialists performed a technical maintenance inspection of the structure.
