Cruise ship passenger jumps into sea off Florida

The US Coast Guard was searching for a man who jumped into the sea from a tourist cruise ship early Saturday as the ship approached Florida.

The man jumped just following midnight when the Carnival Cruise Lines Mardi Gras ship was regarding 55 miles (89 kilometers) east of Port Canaveral, the Coast Guard and Carnival said.

The Coast Guard sent two boats and a plane to search for the 43-year-old man. The Mardi Gras and the cruise ship Elation also participated in the search, said David Micallef, a spokesman for the Coast Guard.

Carnival “is supporting the guest’s family,” Carnival spokesman Matt Lupoli said. “Our prayers and thoughts are with the guest and his family.”

He added that the Mardi Gras proceeded to Port Canaveral once the Coast Guard determined the ship no longer needed to participate in the search.
