Crown Princess Mary of Denmark’s choice of dress following Queen Margaret’s abdication was no coincidence.

Copenhagen – In the New Year’s address by Queen Margrethe II (83) from Denmark In 2024 it became clear that Crown Princess Mary (51)’s life would soon change significantly. The Danish regent surprisingly announced that she would abdicate the throne on January 14th and pass the crown on to her son Crown Prince Frederik (55). The next day, on January 1st, all eyes were on the always stylish princess at the traditional New Year’s reception at Amalienborg Palace. But their magnificent dress was not new, quite the opposite.

Crown Princess Mary sticks to her favorite long-time favorite instead of opting for a new dress

In the burgundy red velvet dress from Birgit Hallstein Couture with a wide scoop neckline, long sleeves and a floor-length train, the princess looked as if she had long been queen. The robe may look familiar to some people, as Mary has worn the gala dress for the sixth time with small changes in a kind of New Year’s tradition.

Amy Smith, a royal fashion expert, has said, according to hellomagazine.com a statement: “Fans of the royal family seem to love that she wears the dress once more and once more rather than opting to wear something new, she is considered a fashion icon. Mary often appears at Copenhagen Fashion Week.” There’s no question that sustainability in fashion is close to Mary’s heart.

The history of Crown Princess Mary’s favorite dress

Crown Princess Mary first wore Birgit Hallstein’s dress in January 2007, aged 34, when she attended the New Year’s gala dinner at Amalienborg Palace. Just a month later, Mary wore the dress alongside the then Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward (59), to the 70th birthday celebrations of King Harald of Norway (86) in Oslo.

Five years later, Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik attended the New Year’s Day and New Year’s Banquet at Christiansborg Palace. The now iconic dress became Mary’s New Year’s favorite, which she wore consistently throughout 2014, 2015, 2020. In the 2024 version, the dress will go down in history as Mary’s inaugural dress following Margrethe’s declaration of abdication.

Choosing a frequently worn dress for this unique occasion also seems to be a matter of the heart for the down-to-earth Australian. The insider: “Perhaps she chose to return to this dress for this special occasion as burgundy is considered a symbol of ambition and sophistication and is also associated with wealth and prosperity,” Smitgh adds.

Stylist and style teacher Sian Clarke knows all regarding color psychology: “Choosing to wear red is a very smart move because it’s a color that grabs attention and is super memorable to the public. Her choice shows us that she is confident in taking on her new role.”

Recycling is also very important to the British royal family. However, none of the Brit royals has repeated themselves as often as Crown Princess Mary. Queen Camilla (76) showed creativity and attacked her husband King Charles (75)’s wardrobe. Sources used: hellomagazine.com, Instagram
