Handicrafts, decorations, clothes, toys, sweets, balloons – everything could be bought at the annual Emmaus fair in Krakow. This year, the fair took place exceptionally near Błonia, because in the area of the Norbertine monastery in Salwator, where it is traditionally organized, the road is being repaired. The stalls were besieged by crowds of Krakow residents and tourists.

For many years, every Easter Monday, several dozen exhibitors and sellers of local artistic crafts and design appear at the Zwierzyniec.
This year, due to renovation works, the fair could not be held on Senatorska, Kasztelańska and Kościuszki streets. Over 100 stalls were placed on the pedestrian and bicycle path from al. 3 Maja at Błonia. Only pedestrians could use the alley, bicycle traffic was closed for safety reasons.
The Emmaus tradition comes from the Middle Ages, when a religious procession from Krakow to the village of Zwierzyniec took place on Easter Monday. The custom of going to churches outside the city was very widespread in Europe, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 19th century, all inhabitants of Krakow attended this “folk festival”: the poorest and the richest.
