The emergency department of the health establishment located in Montérégie has an occupancy rate of more than 200%.

According to the union, 14 nurses took part in the “sit-in” at 7:30 a.m. The latter ended at 11:30 a.m., when nurses were forced to start their shift, at a time when their colleagues who worked nights, and who had extended their shift, had to leave following 16 hours of work.

There are currently five nurses missing on the floor of Anna-Laberge Hospital.

“We have 30 patients waiting for beds on the floors, we have 19 beds available on the floors. On the other hand, the doctors did not take care of these patients. This is what puts a little hold on the emergency,” underlines Dominic Caisse, union agent and interim president of the FIQ Montérégie-Ouest.

In an interview with TVA Nouvelles, the latter explains how the current conditions of the establishment are unfavorable for the staff.

“The lack of staff means that [les infirmières] are unable to provide adequate care. Nurses have a very high patient load. It’s like cutting corners, because if they want to help all patients, there are things that are not done,” he says.

“On the labor front, once more, there’s a big problem.”

The hospital management took action to improve the situation. In particular, she accepted that 10 patients who were in the emergency room go upstairs in order to relieve the emergency.

Contacted by TVA Nouvelles, the Communications and Public Affairs Department of the Montérégie-Ouest Integrated Health and Social Services Center reported that “the management, the medial part and the nursing staff quickly mobilized to find solutions to reduce the pressure.”

Management ensures that it is “monitoring the situation closely with the medical side and the teams to ensure that there are sufficient nursing staff for future shifts.”

Among other strategies to alleviate the emergency, management says it has diverted ambulances and called doctors to ensure “greater care on the units.”

At 12 p.m., the wait in the emergency room was 30 hours. 53 patients were still on stretchers, while in the morning there were 67.
