Crossing the Aerodynamic Divide: Unleashing the Power of Schlieren Technology

As an accompanying measure to the construction of the Limmattalbahn, Zurich voters approved the expansion of various intersections on the Bernstrasse and Überlandstrasse in Dietikon and Schlieren. This means that the centers of these two cities can be relieved of through traffic.

Motorized traffic is to be relocated from Badenerstrasse and Zürcherstrasse to the Bern and Überlandstrasse axis. However, in order to accommodate the additional traffic volume, various intersections need to be expanded – including the Engstringer intersection in Schlieren. The intersection is to be expanded with an underpass for the main traffic axis. This increases the capacity for left turns and thus the performance of the intersection. However, it will still be possible to drive on the main traffic axis above ground. This is essential so that traffic can circulate even if the underpass is closed and exceptional transports with oversized goods can continue to pass through the intersection. The project also includes redesigning the Engstringerstrasse/Rütistrasse intersection as a roundabout.

The government council has approved the road project and released a partial amount of 47.6 million francs from the framework and additional credit for the Limmattalbahn 2nd stage. Unless legal action is taken against the determination, the cantonal civil engineering office plans to begin construction work at the end of 2025. The construction time is around two and a half years.

The Limmattalbahn: Revolutionizing Transportation in Zurich and Aargau

The construction of the Limmattalbahn, a major light rail project in Switzerland, is set to transform the transportation landscape in the cantons of Zurich and Aargau [[1]]. As part of this project, Zurich voters have approved the expansion of various intersections on the Bernstrasse and Überlandstrasse in Dietikon and Schlieren. This move is expected to relieve the centers of these two cities from through traffic, promoting a more efficient and organized transportation system.

The plan involves relocating motorized traffic from Badenerstrasse and Zürcherstrasse to the Bern and Überlandstrasse axis. However, to accommodate the additional traffic volume, several intersections will need to be expanded. The Engstringer intersection in Schlieren is one such example, which will be upgraded with an underpass for the main traffic axis. This upgrade will increase the capacity for left turns and enhance the overall performance of the intersection [[2]].

Interestingly, the project also involves redesigning the Engstringerstrasse/Rütistrasse intersection as a roundabout. This innovative approach is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. Moreover, the underpass will be designed to allow for traffic circulation even when it is closed, and exceptional transports with oversized goods will still be able to pass through the intersection.

The government council has given the green light to the road project, releasing a partial amount of 47.6 million francs from the framework and additional credit for the Limmattalbahn’s second stage. Construction work is scheduled to begin at the end of 2025, with a completion time of around two and a half years.

The Limmattalbahn project is a testament to Switzerland’s commitment to investing in modern transportation infrastructure [[3]]. With its efficient design and innovative features, this project is poised to transform the transportation landscape in Zurich and Aargau, promoting a more sustainable and organized system for years to come.
