On the evening of October 3rd, Taiwan’s “Crosstalk Troupe” concluded its last performance in Tianjin. On October 4, they went to Jining, Shandong, and continued their mainland trip at the Liaohe Grand Theater.
Liu Zengkai is a well-known cross talk actor in Taiwan and the mentor of Ji Tianyu, the leader of the “Cross Talk Troupe”. He studied under Mr. Wu Zhaonan, a famous Taiwanese crosstalk master. In 2006, he became the first Taiwanese crosstalk actor to appear on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala.
“People always ask what is the difference in the development of cross talk in Taiwan? There is no difference! If it is ‘different’, it is not cross talk. The cultures of both sides of the Taiwan Strait are from the same origin, and they are harmonious and the same. What the members gained from this trip to Tianjin is experience , what I see is the gap, but what I enjoy more is the stage. In Taiwan, there are not many opportunities to perform in small theaters or teahouses. Getting close to the audience is also part of the core of cross talk culture.” Liu Zengkai said.

In the 1990s, Liu Zengkai actively participated in cross-strait folk art and cultural exchanges. He has been performing cross talk in Beijing, Gansu, Qinghai… and even San Francisco, Los Angeles and other places in the United States.
“When I first met Mr. Ma Zhiming in Taiwan, he asked me what I thought of “Eight Fan Screens” and let me know. Then we had an in-depth discussion about “Eight Fan Screens”. This is the master of cross talk. Let me talk about ‘life’ with you.” Liu Zengkai said that he has collaborated with many mainland crosstalk actors on the same stage, and some are even temporary partners. After everyone agrees on the “script”, he will go on stage directly. But precisely because they share the same blood and study, the “baggage” they shed is all relevant.
Crosstalk is an art of language and a treasure of Chinese folk art culture, telling people’s daily lives and the changes of the times. Liu Zengkai hopes that more people will understand and love cross talk and feel the continuity of cross-strait cross talk.
“Ji Tianyu was my first apprentice. When I was learning jokes, I once said she cried because her eyes, tone of voice, and demeanor were not up to par. But she has a lot of energy and drive, and she never gave up. “Ji Tianyu said that this trip also allowed her to experience the profound connotation of cross talk culture, “During the three-day performance in Tianjin, we felt the enthusiasm of the audience, but also felt the pressure. The Tianjin audience really sat on the stage. It’s clear to the audience whether the ‘job’ is good or not.”

Both Liu Zengkai and Ji Tianyu hope that the “crosstalk troupe” will grow stronger and perform in more places, allowing the audience to witness the growth of the actors, and letting more people know that crosstalk also has a good inheritance and development in Taiwan.
“In the past few days, we have been carefully observing the actors’ performances and the audience’s response. The crosstalk actors in the celebrity teahouse will also help young Taiwanese actors make on-the-spot adjustments to adapt to Tianjin’s cultural environment. Such exchanges are very meaningful to Taiwanese young people To experience the charm of traditional cross talk in the most direct way, we are also pleased that cross talk has its own soil in Taiwan.” Yu Chengyan, owner of a celebrity teahouse in Tianjin, said.
Both Shang Chenxin and Wang Chenchen, members of the “Crosstalk Heavenly Troupe”, came to Tianjin for the first time, and they have a deep understanding of the “strictness” of the audience. “There are many opportunities for cross talk in teahouses in Tianjin to interact with the audience, and the actors’ ability to adapt to the situation is very demanding. Liu Zengkai, who serves as an associate professor at Taiwan Chongyou University of Art and Technology, also brings Chinese folk art culture to Taiwanese campuses.
