The wind whipped across the snow-covered slopes of marcialonga, mirroring the intensity of the final sprint. After a grueling race, the finish line was in sight, and three skiers – Sweden’s Max novak and Norway’s Johannes Nygaard and Amund Hoel – found themselves locked in a thrilling battle for the podium. With 500 meters to go, the tension was palpable as the trio exchanged glances, anticipation hanging heavy in the air. Amund Hoel, unable to hold the pace, eventually dropped back, leaving Novak and Nygaard to duel for ultimate victory.
“I knew I would never get this chance again. I would never forgive myself if I didn’t take it,” Nygaard exclaimed, tears welling in his eyes as he crossed the finish line. His decisive move in the penultimate stretch secured his victory, by a mere half-second.
This win marked a historic moment for Nygaard, earning him a coveted spot in ski racing history. He now boasts an impressive collection of victories, having conquered all four major Ski Classics races: Vasaloppet, marcialonga, Jizerska 50, and Birkebeinerrennet.
Novak, despite the disappointment of narrowly missing the top spot, displayed remarkable resilience, pushing Nygaard all the way to the finish. “today I lost a first place, enough with respectable podium places. The fact that I didn’t take the inside curve a hundred meters before the finish will probably haunt me for a while. It’s not bad to be second in Marcialonga, but today I should have won,” Novak remarked.
Veteran expert Anders Blomquist lauded Novak’s performance, acknowledging his relentless pursuit.”what a nice race Max Novak does, he challenges all the way and doesn’t back down,” Blomquist said, highlighting Novak’s tenacity and sporting spirit.
Adding to the drama of the day, rising star Alvar Myhlback, reportedly feeling unwell, chose to sit out the race, depriving fans of a potential showdown between the young talent and the seasoned veterans.
