Ruka – The Styrian Mika Vermeulen caused a big surprise at the cross-country skiing World Cup opener in Ruka when he came fourth in the 20 km skating mass start. After actively organizing the race, the 24-year-old was only 1.5 seconds behind the third-placed Norwegian Harald Östberg Amundsen in the sprint of a twelve-strong leading group. The victory went no less sensationally to his compatriot Jan Thomas Jenssen ahead of the Czech Michal Novak.
