Cross-Border Teleworking Taxation: Implications for Swiss Employers and Neighboring Countries

Even without setting foot in Switzerland, residents of neighboring countries hired by a Swiss employer could soon be deducted at source. Until now, double taxation conventions prevented such a scenario from happening. But teleworking has increased significantly since the pandemic. And in a cross-border context, this development has “repercussions on taxation”, writes the Federal Council in a communiqué published Friday.

So that Switzerland “loses as little tax revenue as possible”, the Seven Wise Men therefore adopted a bill aimed at taxing cross-border teleworkers. Agreements to this effect had already been negotiated with France and Italy. With the creation of a legal basis, the taxation of people employed in Switzerland but working from home office abroad could extend to other neighboring countries. Nothing has yet been done, that said, because Switzerland will have to come to an agreement with the countries concerned to take action.
