“Crocodile Rutting Season in Florida: Wildlife Hazards for Residents and Tourists”

In Florida, the rutting season for crocodiles has started earlier than usual. Many animals also roam in residential areas.

In the US state of Florida, male crocodiles are looking for partners earlier than usual – and are causing problems in the popular tourist destination. The journal Field and Stream reports more than usual crocodile sightings in populated areas.

The rutting season started in April and might last until June. The reason given is the warm weather, which started earlier than usual this year. The love-mad reptiles have already caused disruptions to traffic. There are also reports of injured residents. “The crocodiles are running amok,” the magazine describes the situation in the “Sunshine State,” one of America’s most popular vacation destinations. They didn’t even stop at metal fences, as a video on Instagram shows.

1.3 million crocodiles in the state of Florida

Although the state authorities warn of the wild animals, they will not catch them as long as there is no concrete danger to people. Because the 1.3 million animals that live in the state seem to like coming back to their favorite spot.

Assaults on humans are rare in Florida, says the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Authority. On her website she has put together tips for tourists and residents on how to behave when encountering a crocodile. “Keep your distance and never feed the animal. Only swim during the day where permitted. Keep animals on a leash and away from the river or lake shore.”
