Croatia fully on course for the European Championships after a 2-0 qualifying win in Latvia

Team boss Zlatko Dalic’s team deservedly beat Latvia 2-0 in Riga on Saturday and are now two points ahead of Wales in second place in qualifying group D before the final round. The Welsh moved into a better position with a 1-1 draw in Armenia. The Croatians still have a chance of winning the group.

This would require a home win once morest Armenia and a simultaneous defeat by table leaders Turkey, who have already qualified for the European Championship, in Wales. The Welsh, on the other hand, have to win themselves and hope for a Croatian upset in order to be able to make it to a top two place.

In Riga, the Croatians set the course for victory early on, largely thanks to the outstanding Lovro Majer. The 25-year-old midfielder from VfL Wolfsburg scored in the 7th minute following Ivanusec’s preparatory work and set up Andrej Kramaric’s second goal (16th). After the break, a significantly higher away win would have been possible.

The Welsh had to overcome a false start in Yerevan following an early goal from Lucas Zelarayan (5′), but they were unable to do more than equalize with an own goal from Nair Tiknizyan (45’+2). That wouldn’t have been fair either, as the Armenians were closer to the winning goal.
