Critical Forest Fires Continue to Rage in Northwestern Quebec: Updates and Evacuations

SOPFEU’s work is far from over as several forest fires continue to rage in northwestern Quebec.

In an interview with LCN, SOPFEU spokesperson Stéphane Caron explained that the situation in Abitibi and Nord-du-Québec remained critical. Moreover, new evacuations were announced on Friday.

After a brief lull, the fires have resumed in the past few days.

“It is this week’s weather that is causing considerable drying out and causing the intensities and the rates of spread to be much higher,” explains the SOPFEU spokesperson.

The teams deployed are currently working on the edges of the forests, in an attempt to curb the spread of the flames towards the communities.

“We do a lot of work to protect these communities,” says Mr. Caron.

The weekend does not promise to be easy, since it is still hot and dry weather that is expected for the sectors affected by the fires.

“We haven’t left the inn yet because they are not yet announcing rain before Monday or Tuesday,” says Stéphane Caron.

It will take good rainfall to help SOPFEU protect the population and control the fires, warns Mr. Caron. And even if the expected rain ends up falling, we must not declare victory too quickly.

“Fires that are contained, if not completely extinguished before another dry spell occurs […] they can be reborn from their ashes”, he mentions.
