A comparative report released yesterday Monday by think tank King’sFund says UK leaders should be ‘seriously concerned’ regarding the state of the national health system.
The authors of this report state that the UK “performs worse than many of its peers on several measures, including life expectancy and deaths that might have been avoided with effective, timely healthcare and preventive services”.
This report states that mortality from colon, breast and lung cancer is higher in the UK than in 18 comparable countries.
Great Britain ranks second to last in terms of mortality for diseases classified as preventable or curable (such as breast or colorectal cancers). on a list where the United States is once once more, ranked last, Japan and Italy are at the top as well as Australia and France which appear among the best ranked countries.
The UK also has the highest 30-day death rate following admission to hospital for stroke.
Finally, the public health system in the country suffers from a shortage of personnel and equipment. It has a ‘surprisingly low number of nurses and doctors per person compared to its peers’, the UK is last in the rankings for the number of CT scans and MRIs, at 16.1 per million inhabitants, compared to 166.7 in Japan, and also has a relatively low number of hospital beds compared to the average of the 19 countries, with 2.5 beds per 1,000 inhabitants, compared to 3.2 on average.
The NHS, the British public health system which celebrates its 75th anniversary in early July, is going through a deep crisis, weakened by austerity policies and the consequences of the covid-19 pandemic.
The sector has been confronted for months with historic strikes by nurses, paramedics and doctors, who are demanding pay rises and better working conditions, forcing the British to wait long on waiting lists before being able to access the care.
