Less than 24 hours following Portugal’s elimination in the quarter-finals of the European Championship (by France on penalties), the 39-year-old former Real Madrid player left the door open to continue responding to possible calls from his national team coach Roberto Martínez.
“We wanted more. We deserved more. For ourselves and for each of you. For Portugal. We are grateful for everything you have given us and for everything we have achieved so far. On and off the pitch, I am sure that this legacy will be honoured and will continue to be built. Together,” he wrote on ‘X’.
Cristiano Ronaldo played in all of Portugal’s matches at the Euros. In total, he started all five: the three in the group stage (Czech Republic, Turkey and Georgia), the round of 16 (Slovenia) and the quarter-final (France). But he left the Euros without scoring a goal from open play in the 486 minutes he played, the second for his team only behind goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who had 510.
