The Chilean Cristian Garin, 100th in the ranking, had a tremendous debut in the first round of the ATP 250 in Santiago, after winning by 6-2 y 7-6(2) to Austrian Dominic Thiem, former number three in the world.
Garin entered with everything in the first set and struck two breaks against Thiem, currently in the 99th place of the ranking.
After the quick procedure that was the initial sleeve, the second set had a much more even pace, with both tennis players pressing and holding their services, despite the fact that they had several chances to break.
Everything was resolved in the tiebreak, where Garin delivered three minibreaks to win the second set and the match, after one hour and 44 minutes of gameplay.
In the next round, Garin will face the Argentine Sebastian Baez35th in the ranking and who had the first round free, due to his condition as third favorite in the Chile Open.
