A Toyota Japan has been going through a period of bad luck recently and yet another thing has happened to contribute to this. The reason is the accusation that the Daihatsu, one of its brands, allegedly lied regarding the safety of its cars. The company has a habit of producing low-cost cars and kei cars.

This information comes from a report on the portal Carscoops and mentions the company’s action to make structural reinforcements in the doors of some of its cars before validation of crash tests by responsible bodies. Not only that, but the airbag advertised by the company is different from what is used in real life.

A scenario like this might not have had a different effect: Toyota ended up suspending all sales and exports of the subsidiary’s cars. Furthermore, internal investigations have already begun into the situation which appears to have affected a total of 64 different cars, occurring in models dating back to 1989.

In 2022, Daihatsu sold 1.1 million cars and is considered an important arm of Toyota in the market. To give you an idea, it owns 30% of the kei-car segment in Japan and in the company’s total annual volume worldwide, the company represents the equivalent of 4%, despite having models sold in some countries such as Toyota.
