Suhaila was five months pregnant when Israel started firing missiles and drones at Gaza in Rafah. Since then, it has been days of suffering for this young woman, like all the other people of Gaza. Night and day, the terror sounds of explosions and the roar of fighter jets. Mass deaths before our eyes, screams, fleeing, fleeing once more, from camp to camp… these severe trials apart from the physical disadvantages of pregnancy. And the pain of separation from loved ones.
Suhaila finally gave birth last January 20, in a school classroom. The mother and child are still there. Overcrowded, in extremely unsanitary conditions with insects and flies.
Suhaila has not yet recovered from the shock of having more than eighty people killed in front of her in a single shelling attack. After that, Nusayla and other family members were walking to the camp in Nusayram. A school was converted into a camp. Suhailak also got space in a room here. This young lady has been living there ever since.
The U.N. says this is the case for almost all pregnant women in Gaza. It is estimated that there are regarding 50,000 pregnant women in Gaza, which has a population of 2.3 million. At least 180 births will take place in a day. Almost all the hospitals were destroyed. The partially functional ones lack adequate facilities to treat even those seriously injured in the attacks. Childbirth and care for pregnant women in refugee camps.

Those who have complications in childbirth are taken to hospitals. Or in front of the doctors who come to the camps. Citing some NGOs, Aljazeera reports that caesarean sections are being performed there without anesthesia or even painkillers. Not a single hospital in Gaza has facilities to provide even basic care to pregnant women. No good food, no clean clothes. The World Health Organization itself says that not a single hospital in northern Gaza is now fully functional.
In addition to this, miscarriages occur and babies die in the womb due to the terrible noise and violence of the bombardment. A Norwegian nurse who recently visited Gaza as part of the World Health Organization shared the experience of a young woman who has been living with a baby in her stomach for a month because the hospital was unable to take out the babies in such a condition.
The people of Gaza are lucky enough to have something to eat following nutrition. Pregnant women are no different. Fresh water is available here. Hungry children rummage among the garbage for something to eat. The UN agencies themselves have warned the world that the people of Gaza are on the brink of starvation due to the war and Israel’s severe blockade. The World Health Organization also says that babies born into this situation face serious health problems.
