The crisis cabinet of the Austrian government met yesterday morning because of the events in Russia. Represented were Chancellor Karl Nehammer (VP), Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens), Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (VP), Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (VP), Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (VP) and representatives of the three Austrian intelligence services Directorate State Protection and Intelligence Service (DSN), Defense Office and Army Intelligence Office (HNA).
The meeting was convened on Saturday evening, at a time when the Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin had not yet ordered his troops back.
The current situation creates uncertainty, explained Chancellor Nehammer following the meeting. The war once morest Ukraine is clearly leaving its mark on Russia. “The situation within Russia was and to a certain extent remains worrying,” said Vice Chancellor Kogler.
The question of whether hypothetical extreme scenarios of a Russian civil war and the collapse of the Russian Federation had also been discussed in the Crisis Cabinet on Sunday was answered evasively by Nehammer. If a superpower were destabilized, there would be consequences, he said. And Kogler added: “Despite all the sympathy for the victims of the war of aggression (Ukraine, note), it’s not good news when things are going haywire in Russia.” Nehammer and Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen are also in constant contact because of developments in Russia.
In view of the events, the Austrian Foreign Ministry issued a partial travel warning for Russia on Saturday. The Foreign Ministry warns once morest all travel to the Russian administrative districts of Belgorod, Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh, Rostov and Krasnodar bordering Ukraine. In particular, the city of Rostow and the surrounding area should be avoided. In Moscow and other cities in Russia, too, “increased attention should be shown”.
