Crisis in Venezuela: AMLO rejects “interventionism” and “imposition” from abroad

MEXICO CITY.- This Thursday, during his usual morning press conference, the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradoroffered more support from his Government, if the Venezuela’s post-election crisis after the proclaimed re-election of Nicolas Maduroalthough he asked that there be no “interventionism” or “imposition” from abroad.

“Yes (Mexico’s role will continue), as long as it is seen that there is will, that there is a democratic, authentic vocation, that there is no interventionism or desire for imposition or ideological burden, but rather that the will of the Venezuelans is respected, what they decided,” said the president in response to a direct question at his morning press conference.

Hours before, the Colombian Foreign Minister, Luis Gilberto Murillosaid in Cartagena that he sees a “light of hope” in the efforts made by Colombia, Mexico and Brazil for the Venezuelan crisisin addition to announcing that the three countries will publish a new statement on Thursday on the work they are doing.

While the Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado On Wednesday, he expressed confidence that “clear, firm and effective terms of negotiation” can be established with the support of these three nations because “they have a channel of communication that others do not have with the regime” and “they have maintained a prudent position.”

The Mexican leader now insisted that “the electoral authority announce the results” and “follow the established procedure” in Venezuela, where the National Electoral Council (CNE) has already proclaimed Maduro as re-elected president after the elections of July 28.

His position contrasts with that of the leftist president of Chile Gabriel Boricwho on Wednesday said he had “no doubt” that the Maduro government “tried to commit fraud.”

“They have already submitted the minutes (to the electoral court), as I understand it, so a review of the minutes must be done, that is the responsibility of the electoral court and to know for certain who won, but no one can name themselves or proclaim themselves victorious, if there is no electoral body that decides,” López Obrador clarified.

The president recalled that his position has been “the peaceful resolution of controversies” after his call last week with his counterparts from Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and from Colombia, Gustavo Petro.

Although the post-election protests have left more than twenty civilians dead and nearly 2,230 arrested in Venezuela, López Obrador maintained that his position “has had results” and that “violence and repression are not the way forward.”

“We do not want interference and what I also celebrate, more than anything else, is that there is no violence. When President Lula and President Petro asked me to talk about the issue, we agreed that the most important thing was to avoid confrontation and violence,” he said.
