While the capital Khartoum has been in chaos since April 15, the day hostilities broke out between the Sudanese army loyal to General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and the paramilitaries of the FSR, led by General Hemedti, the international community is alerting a humanitarian situation that is turning into a disaster.

A new truce was renewed on Sunday for 72 hours, as foreign nationals continue to be evacuated from Sudan and Sudanese flee by the thousands to neighboring countries. More than 800,000 people will seek refuge in Egypt, Chad, Ethiopia or the Central African Republic, according to the UN.

Those who have chosen to stay in Sudan are forced to endure shortages of water, electricity and food.

At a UN meeting on Monday, Sudan’s humanitarian aid coordinator Abdou Dieng sounded the alarm over the humanitarian situation in the country, which he described as a “real disaster”. .

For his part, Kenyan President William Ruto confirmed that the crisis has reached “a catastrophic level”. According to him, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and Hemedti, refuse “to hear the calls” of the international community. The Kenyan leader called for the delivery of humanitarian aid “with or without a ceasefire”.

Washington, through its head of diplomacy, Antony Blinken, “reiterated the support of the United States for diplomatic efforts to end the conflict and ensure unimpeded humanitarian access”.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths was dispatched to Nairobi on Monday for an emergency mission. “The situation since April 15 has been catastrophic (…) I am on my way to study how we can provide immediate aid” to the inhabitants, he underlined before adding on Twitter that the “humanitarian situation is reaching a breaking point”.

Violence and looting in Sudan have affected hospitals and humanitarian organizations, many of which have suspended their activities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed fears regarding the collapse of Sudan’s health system, which was already struggling before the crisis began. For now, 16% of health facilities are still functioning in Khartoum. However, WHO said six containers of medical supplies have arrived in Sudan, including to treat the seriously injured and acutely malnourished patients.
