Despite the great crisis surrounding the president of the Spanish Football Federation, due to his kissing a player on the mouth during the celebration of Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup, the federation expressed its support for its president, Luis Rubiales.

In a statement issued in the early hours of Saturday morning, the federation said that it “will take legal measures to defend Rubiales,” noting that it “will prove that Irmoso or those speaking on her behalf lied regarding what happened,” referring to the player Jenny Irmoso, who kissed her.

The statement published on the federation’s website did not clarify what legal measures it intends to take.

On Friday, Rubiales refused to resign in connection with the events of last Sunday, and said that the kiss was “spontaneous, mutual, joyful and consensual,” while the player said that it was “not consensual” and that she felt “assaulted.”

The player had the support of the Spanish government, which cannot dismiss Rubiales, but condemned what he had done, and said that she would “resort to a sports court to stop him.”

In a joint statement sent by Spain’s Women’s Professional Footballers’ Association, the 23 players who made up Spain’s World Cup-winning squad, including Hermoso, as well as 32 other players, said they “will not play international matches as long as Rubiales continues in his position as president of the federation.”

In the statement issued on Saturday, the Spanish Football Federation said: “The federation and its president will take appropriate legal measures in view of the seriousness of what came in the statement of the Federation of Professional Football Players in Spain.”

He added, “Under the rule of law, facts and evidence nullify opinions, and lies are refuted in court. The federation and its president will show every lie published by a person on behalf of the player or the player herself,” according to Archyde.com.

The federation attached four photos from the medal distribution ceremony to the statement, which it said illustrated the “trueness” of Rubiales’ claim that “Hermoso campaigned”.

Archyde.com was unable to reach an official from Spain’s WTA by telephone seeking comment

Rubiales was expected to resign during an emergency meeting of the union on Friday, but he stuck to his position, saying that “the fake feminists are trying to destroy me.”
