Armenian authorities said that as of Thursday, more than 70,000 Karabakhs had left their homes in Nagorno-Karabakh and moved to their territory in search of refuge.

Nazeli Baghdasarián, spokesperson for the Armenian Prime Minister, stated that a total of 70,500 forcibly displaced people arrived from Artsakh in the last five days, representing more than half of the total population there.

Of them, 50,866 have already been registered and the majority have family or friends’ homes in Armenia while the rest receive accommodation provided by the State.

The massive displacements began this Sunday and were plagued with obstacles and difficulties. That same day at night, the only route connecting Nagorno Karabakh with Armenia was already clogged by the number of cars leaving the place.

On Monday night a fuel tank exploded at a gas station where many people were lining up to also flee. At least 68 fatalities were recorded, some 300 injured and more than a hundred missing.

In addition, there was a fuel shortage due to the sudden increase in demand.

“Everyone worked during the night and it should be noted that the intensity of arrivals has not decreased at all, and we continue to serve regarding 1,000 people per hour, directing and carrying out their registration,” Baghdasarián said in this regard.

To support this migration, the Armenian Government will provide – once the congestion in the Lachin corridor has been relieved – regarding 35 buses that will transport Karabakhis who do not have their own vehicle from the capital – Stepanakert – to the country.

This Armenian exodus occurred in response to the recent announcement by the Government of this separatist enclave that, as of January 1, 2024, the Republic would be dissolved and, therefore, would cease to exist.

In a decree, leader Samvel Shajramanyan noted that, as of the new year, the republic founded more than three decades ago “ceases its existence.”

In response to this announcement, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinián, denounced that “ethnic cleansing” is being carried out there and assured that, in the coming days, there will be no Armenians left in the territory.

“It is painful. Our whole life has been reduced to dust,” lamented Lilit Grigorian, a 32-year-old teacher who, like so many others, hoped to cross the border because her rights and safety would not be respected.

In this context, Pashinián also urged the support of the international community, as his Foreign Minister, Ararat Mirzoyan, did days ago during the United Nations General Assembly.

At that meeting, the official requested the “immediate” sending of a UN “mission” to Nagorno Karabakh to evaluate and control the situation on the ground.

“The international community should make every effort for the immediate deployment of a UN inter-agency mission in Nagorno-Karabakh with the aim of monitoring and evaluating the human rights and humanitarian and security situation on the ground,” he said.
