Crisis in Gaza: UN Security Council Ceasefire Resolution Fails, US Vetoed

Tel Aviv: Despite Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ direct intervention, the resolution presented to the UN Security Council for a ceasefire in Gaza failed after the US vetoed it. 13 members of the 15-member committee voted in favor of the resolution. Britain left. The move by the U.S. shows that the ceasefire will benefit Hamas and repeat the October 7 attack on Israel.

The US says an immediate ceasefire would sow the seeds for the next war and that Hamas does not want a lasting peace or a two-state solution. Guterres has called for immediate intervention by members of the UN Security Council as Gaza spirals into disaster.

Later, the UAE submitted an urgent resolution. There was strong pressure on Israel’s ally, the US, to support the resolution. The Palestinian Authority and Arab countries came out against the US action.

Meanwhile, Israel has redoubled its bombardment across Gaza, even as the world calls for an end to the attacks. Airstrikes killed 11 people in Khan Younis and Rafah in southern Gaza. More than 20 people were killed in Central Gaza. More than 17,480 civilians have lost their lives in Gaza so far.

If we cannot stop the bombing of Gaza, what message are we sending to the Palestinian people?

– Mohammad Abushah, UN Representative, UAE

The situation in West Asia is heading towards an explosion

– Hossein Amir-Abdollahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Iran
