Thousands of Palestinian civilians fled on Wednesday the north of the Gaza Strip pounded by bombings by Israel, which claims to be tightening its grip on Gaza City and Hamas fighters. The Israeli army said that 50,000 civilians fled Wednesday through the “evacuation corridor» opened for a few hours on the road linking the north to the south of Gaza, compared to 15,000 counted Tuesday by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha).

«They leave because they understand that Hamas has lost control of the north and that the situation is more secure in the south“, said army spokesperson Daniel Hagari, adding that this corridor would be open once more on Thursday. Leaving their homes empty-handed or taking only the bare necessities, they headed on foot or by cart towards the south of the territory where hundreds of thousands of displaced people were already crowded. According to the UN, 1.5 million people of Gaza’s 2.4 million inhabitants have been displaced by the war.
