The 2023 wintering has started in Casamance. And, in less than 48 hours of presence in certain parts of the region, the rainfall is beginning to seriously worry the populations. In addition to the department of Oussouye – which received heavy rainfall – the Sénoba-Bignona axis, on the RN°4, received its too large share of water.
And the waters falling from the sky, last night as this morning, caused enormous material damage on the site of the repair of this National Road N°4 which connects the north to the south of Casamance. This route is also the one that connects Casamance to the rest of Senegal via Gambia and the famous Senegambia bridge which was the pride of Presidents Macky Sall and Adama Barrow. According to witnesses on the spot, “the road is completely cut off because of the water. And, since that night no one can cross and connect the two sides without forcing and forcing through the waters. While some have made it through, many transports are stuck with their passengers on the roads.
The rupture of this bridge under construction, the day following the Tabaski festival which sees an important activity on this National road, intervenes in a very complicated political context for the populations who want to connect Casamance to the rest of Senegal.
For the past few days, the people from Casamance have felt stigmatized by the government, which decided without any explanation to stop the Senegal-Dem-Dikk buses like the boats that linked Dakar to Ziguinchor. The populations were left with only traditional and expensive transport, with a dilapidated and uncomfortable car fleet. Added to this is the pitfall of the bumpy state of this RN°4, which has been under construction for several months; without any assurance that it will be completed and delivered within a reasonable time. With the breaking of this bridge, everything leads to believe that the populations are left with only the plane which is, unfortunately, not within everyone’s reach.
