Crisis at the Costa Rican Border: Government Considers State of Emergency as Migrant Numbers Soar

The Costa Rican government is considering declaring a state of emergency due to the growing number of migrants crossing the country towards the United States. This measure would make it possible to free up exceptional financial resources to deal with the crisis, President Rodrigo Chaves explained on Tuesday. More than 386,000 migrants have crossed the border between Panama and Costa Rica since January.

“We all know that there is a migration crisis on the American continent,” underlined Mr. Chaves. Costa Rica is primarily a transit country. In September alone, more than 60,000 refugees arrived in the border town of Paso Canoas, the equivalent of three times its population. Security on migratory routes must therefore be improved, said the president.

Other Central American countries, such as Panama, have also recently announced measures due to the high number of migrants. In Mexico, the last stop before the US border, stricter controls have been put in place, among other things, to prevent migrants from boarding freight trains as stowaways.

Most people who want to come to the United States are fleeing poverty, violence and political crises in their home countries.
