Swiss Protestant Entraide fails to gain access to the Gaza Strip

“Humanitarian organizations ask for access, but do not obtain it,” indicates the director of the Swiss Protestant Entraide Hakam Awad, whose organization tries in vain to gain access to the Gaza Strip. “At the moment, it’s very difficult,” he declares in the German-speaking titles of the Tamedia group. Stocks from previous deliveries can still be used, Hakam Award continues, although it is not known how long there is before they are exhausted.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said earlier that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, deprived of water, electricity and food supplies, will be “very quickly unmanageable”. “Without electricity, hospitals risk turning into morgues,” said its regional director Fabrizio Carboni.

Brazil calls for opening of humanitarian corridor for civilians

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the President of Brazil who chairs the UN Security Council, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he had asked his Israeli counterpart to open a humanitarian corridor for the evacuation of civilians from Gaza.

“I recently spoke with the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog […] I transmitted my request for a humanitarian corridor so that people who want to leave the Gaza Strip through Egypt are safe,” he wrote, worrying regarding the fate of civilians, in particular the “lack of water , electricity and medicines in hospitals. “It is not possible for innocent people to be victims of the madness of those who want war,” adds Lula.

Brazil has convened a new meeting of the UN Security Council for this Friday to address the situation in the Gaza Strip.

Human Rights Watch denounces Israel’s use of phosphorus bombs

L’ONG Human Rights Watch asserts having “verified videos recorded in Lebanon and Gaza on October 10 and 11, 2023 respectively, showing numerous aerial explosions of white phosphorus coming from artillery fire” by the Israeli army. She also indicates having collected testimonies regarding one of these bombings in Gaza. “Israeli Use of White Phosphorus Munitions […] in Gaza, one of the most densely populated areas in the world, amplifies the danger for civilians, and violates the prohibition, under international humanitarian law, of exposing civilians to unnecessary risks,” denounces the NGO . In the urban areas, “this substance can set houses on fire and cause considerable harm to civilians,” says Lama Fakih, director of the Middle East and North Africa division at Human Rights Watch.

UN appeals for donations for Gaza and West Bank

The UN is launching an emergency appeal for donations worth $294 million to help people in Gaza and the West Bank. The appeal is intended to provide aid to more than 1.2 million residents in Gaza and the West Bank, says the UN humanitarian affairs office, stressing that humanitarian organizations no longer have the necessary resources to “adequately respond to the needs of vulnerable Palestinians”.

The UN humanitarian plan for the two territories for 2023 was estimated at $502 million to help 2.1 million inhabitants, but it is currently less than 50% funded. While nearly 60% of households in Gaza were already considered food insecure before the start of these new hostilities.

More than 423,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in the Gaza Strip, under siege and shelled by the Israeli army, says the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in its latest report. The number of displaced people increased by 84,444 people to reach 423,378, specifies the UN office. This number, which increased by 25% in 24 hours, represents nearly one in five people living in this densely populated territory of 2.3 million inhabitants.
