Criminals use AirTags to track and steal travelers’ cars in Canada

We have already followed several cases in which the AirTag has become a great ally for recovering personal objects and possessions. However, not everything is perfect. At the Canadacriminals are using Apple’s tracker to facilitate car theft.

One WCAX vehicle matter shows the case of Ethan Yang, a resident of the American state of Massachusetts who frequently travels to Montreal, Canada.

During his return from one of these trips, while he was crossing the border between the two countries, he claims that he was alerted by his phone (which, in the video, appears to be an Android) that an unrecognized AirTag was nearby. He was able to trigger the tracker to beep, finding it hidden in the car’s front grille.

According to the Burlington (Vermont) police, two other reports have already been recorded of people finding trackers in their vehicles following returning from Montreal.

Ryan McLiverty, cyber analyst at the Vermont Intelligence Center, explained to WCAX that these cases have been occurring for some time, but that there appears to be a new spike in the use of technologies — such as AirTag — to track, steal and resell cars in Montreal.

Another possibility he raised is the movement of small quantities of drugs across the border between Canada and the United States.

What a thing, right?
