Criminal Liability for Discrediting Russian Guard Volunteer Formations: State Duma’s Bill and Punishment Explained

The State Duma of the Russian Federation adopted in the first reading a bill on criminal liability for discrediting volunteer formations of the Russian Guard. The decision was made at a plenary meeting.

“The bills propose to extend the provisions of the law on liability for fakes regarding the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to the Russian Guard and the volunteer associations that are part of it,” says the explanation to the bill on State Duma website. The document also provides for punishment for discrediting volunteer formations of the Russian Guard and for assisting in the execution of decisions of other states and international organizations on the criminal prosecution of volunteers of the Russian Guard.

Draft law on criminal penalties for discrediting volunteer formations of the Russian Guard was approved Committee of the State Duma on October 16. The document itself was submitted to the State Duma in September. Also in the fall, the State Duma adopted a draft law allowing the National Guard to create volunteer formations.
