It is a comic drama about married life, which encourages thinking about the relationship between a married couple and their evolution. The author of the play has decided that married life is a union of murderers, who first attack others and then themselves, it is a long road to death, littered with corpses. The show also has a detective line. Can a crime be solved when it is simply a marriage, a life?
The person himself is exposed to x-rays
Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s 2003 wrote the play “Petits Crimes conjugaux” (pronounced “Petits Crimes conjugaux”) – it is a comic drama about married life, which encourages thinking about the relationship between married couples and their evolution. It can even be called a black comedy with a strong detective line. The premiere of the play took place in 2003. in September in Paris.
In the play, the person himself is irradiated like an X-ray, highlighting the flaws that are not always obvious: vanity, blindness dictated by pride and ambition, possessiveness, claims to illusory eternal love, inability to appreciate it. The play does not cease to be relevant – human nature does not change, every time we have to play with it, deceive it, in order to understand that it is not worth joking with the noblest feelings, in this case love.
According to the director R.Banionis, the situation is extraordinary on the one hand – a man who has lost his memory, but on the other hand it is painfully familiar – collisions, antagonism, dissatisfaction between two close people, and at the same time, a strong bond, obligations and love are invisible.
Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt: “Married life is a union of murderers”
É.-E.Schmitt is a French writer, director, one of the most popular contemporary playwrights. His works have been translated into more than 40 languages, and his plays are constantly performed on stages around the world. É.-E. Schmitt is often called “an expert on the human soul”.
The play’s dialogues are exceptional: masterful, expressive, delicate. É.-E.Schmitt remains faithful to the classical theater, he is able to speak simply about complex matters, yet the dialogues themselves are only black letters on white paper – they come to life inspired by the intelligence, wit, erudition and talent of the actors.
“Married life is a union of murderers, attacking others first, then themselves, it is a long road to death, littered with corpses. A young couple tries to get rid of other people. In an elderly couple, everyone tries to outdo their partner. When you judge a man and a woman standing in front of the mayor, do you ask yourself, will each of them be a murderer?” – É.-E. Schmitt has expressed the theory of married life in the words of one of the characters.
É.-E. were staged in the old theater of Vilnius. Schmitt’s plays “The Promiscuous” (2005), “Hotel of Two Worlds” (2007), “Oscar and Mrs. Rose” (2015).
Raimundas Banionis: “Two actors is both very little and very much”
Two bright, colorful actors of the Vilnius Old Theater – Inga Maškarina and Vidmantas Fijalkauskas – play in the play. According to the director, this pair of actors will undoubtedly add to the list of the most famous Lithuanian acting duos.
“Two actors is both very little and very much. Little, because there is nowhere for them to hide, they are in the palm of your hand, there is not even a second of respite – all the time in the viewer’s line of sight. A lot, because the actor can use barely noticeable nuances: tone of voice, glances, smile at the corner of the lips. An actor does not need to fight recklessly for the audience’s attention – he has almost no competitors. However, it takes an inhuman effort to maintain attention throughout the performance,” says director Raimundas Banionis.
R. Banionis is a well-known film, television and theater director who directed documentaries and feature films (“My Little Wife”, “Neatmenu tavo veido”, “Children from the “Amerika” Hotel”, “Jazz”, “Purple Fog”), created film opera, television series, staged drama performances in various Lithuanian theaters, which stand out for their theatricality, vivid actors’ characters, dynamics.
